The Local Government Weekend School

The Annual Weekend School for Local Government Lawyers (incorporating the Business Support Manager’s Course and the Local Government Professional Skills Course)

School Director: Dudley Lewis
Administrative Director: Linda Walker

The Weekend School is the major training event for Local Government Lawyers. It has gone from strength to strength and has developed and evolved into the event it is today. It takes place each year during the Easter vacation at a suitable university.

The programme of presentations throughout the Weekend School is constantly developing because of the changing needs of the profession. In 1998 the format of the School was extended to include a new Business Support Manager course and in 1999 the Professional Skills course core modules were specifically designed by the College of Law and integrated into the School. In 2000 this was further extended to include the PSC Elective modules.

Dear Colleague

Weekend School at York University 22nd – 25th April 2010

In 2010 we will be back at York University where we have had some very good times. We hope as many of you as possible will be there for what will be a great event. This year we have reduced the price to a staggering £395 to reflect the difficult economic climate.

It is intended to again put the programme and application form on the SLG Website (www.slgov.org.uk) and you are urged to apply online. However, attached is the usual printed application form which you can complete instead if you prefer and post or fax to Linda.

You will, of course, get the 13 CPD hours but coupled with those you will, once again, enjoy a really varied and comprehensive programme with something for everyone.

All this is set out in the rest of this flyer. Please look at it and come and join us in what will, I am sure, benefit all of you personally and your Authorities also.

Once again there is a very diverse set of sessions covering most subjects that have been requested and proved popular over the past few years, but also including the latest relevant topics. There should be enough choice to please everyone, in fact in some sessions there are five alternatives.

There will be a reception hosted by the Chair on the Thursday evening for Trainees and those of you who are with us for the first time, so that you can get to know people and have any questions you might have answered. After dinner we intend to visit the Castle Museum in York itself.

Some of you will remember the University from our previous visits. It is set on a fine campus just outside York City and has very good facilities all pretty close together in the centre of the campus

The University has done us proud in the past years we have been there and I am sure it will prove very popular in 2010 and that it will be a great few days during which you will be able to relax and enjoy the company of friends and colleagues from all over the country as well as hear many speakers.

We have said before, that the Weekend School is not only a very cost effective way indeed of meeting your CPD needs but it also provides real opportunities for networking with colleagues and making good friends. It is great value, very informative and you can have a great time as well.

A separate letter is being sent to all members of the BSM SIG about the Business Support Managers Seminar. If you have a colleague who is not a member of the SIG but who would be interested in that seminar or if you know of any Local Government Solicitor or Barrister who has not received this information please can you let them have a copy of this or ask them to contact Linda.

Finally a message to all trainee solicitors. It is still not too late to enlist for the residential elements of the Core Modules or Electives of the PSC, which are being run by the College of Law in conjunction with the School. So please get in touch with us as soon as possible.

We very much look forward to seeing you there and hope that as many of you as possible will support us.

Best wishes

Dudley Lewis and Linda Walker
